WHAT WAS CLAIMED

Donald Trump posted offensive remarks about Anthony Albanese on Truth Social.

OUR VERDICT

False. The post is fake.

AAP FACTCHECK - US President Donald Trump did not post offensive remarks about Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Truth Social, despite a claim on social media.

A screenshot of the suspicious post was originally labelled as "fake", and there's no record of Mr Trump making such comments about the Australian PM.

Screenshots of a purported Truth Social post from the US president were shared on Facebook following Labor's re-election on May 3, 2025.

"Anthony Albanese, Australian PM, total RETARD! Running the country into the ground. Sad! We will be discussing our trade deal very SOON. #MakeAustraliaGreatAgain," the purported post said.

The post has tricked some Facebook users, with one commenting, "Pretty Accurate Summation".

However, the Truth Social post in the screenshot is not real.

A reverse image search shows that the same screenshot was earlier posted on X with the caption " BREAKING: Donald Trump posts another fake TRUTH social post about Australia".

The X user appears mainly to post satirical content about Australian politicians.

While the post in the screenshot resembles an authentic Truth Social post from Mr Trump, the font differs from the platform's regular script.

A search of Mr Trump's Truth Social posts for the phrase "Albanese" also shows that he did not post such remarks.

There is also no record of such a post on Trump's Truth, an independent web archive of his posts on Truth Social.

AAP FactCheck could not find any record of the US president making disparaging remarks about Mr Albanese on social media or in any credible news reports.

Mr Trump spoke about the prime minister fondly a day after Labor's election victory, The Guardian reported.

"Albanese, I'm very friendly with," the president told reporters at the White House on May 4, 2025 (local time).

"I don't know anything about the election other than... the man that won is very good. He's a friend of mine."
