WHAT WAS CLAIMED

Donald Trump has announced that driving without a licence will become legal.

OUR VERDICT

False. The US president has not made this announcement.

AAP FACTCHECK - Social media has been flooded with fake TV news stories falsely claiming US President Donald Trump has announced extreme new orders for Americans.

Among the supposed announcements are legalising driving without a licence, preventing permanent residents from entering or leaving the country and requiring an American passport to buy food and medicine.

Posts that have appeared on Facebook use the same "breaking news" format and include a voiceover over various video footage, including the president signing and waving around an executive order.

But the "reports" are fake and there's no official record or credible reports of the announcements being made.

"BREAKING NEWS Trump'slatest announcement: startingtommorow, driving without a licensewill no longer be a crime", overlayed text on a video post reads.

The video appears to be a genuine TV news story, featuring clips of Trump brandishing an executive order.

The "report" is not real, and no such announcement has been made.

A search of the White House website for presidential statements and actions containing the phrase "driver's license" shows no such announcement.

The only result is an executive order and fact sheet for changes to rules for truck drivers, but it does not legalise driving without a licence.

A similar video claims Trump has signed a new executive order banning permanent residents from entering the US.

"Starting June 25permanent residents willnot be able to leave or enterthe United States. It is now official" the text on the video reads.

However, again, there is no evidence that this is real. A search of all the executive orders made by Trump in his second term on the Federal Register does not show any changes to laws specifically for permanent residents.

Another video posted on Facebook claims Trump has made new regulations requiring an American passport to make purchases in supermarkets and drugstores.

"Trump's latest regulation: Without an American passport, you will not be able to purchase food and medicine", the text overlaying the video reads.

Again, the video appears to be a real news story, complete with a voiceover and clips of people shopping.

"This is the latest government regulation that makes it illegal to be alive," the voiceover says.

However, there is no evidence that Trump has announced such a regulation.

A search of the White House website for the terms "passport", "medicine" and "food" also fails to turn up any announcements to support the claim.

In his first presidency, while arguing for greater identification checks on voters, Trump claimed Americans needed an ID to buy groceries.

The Associated Press found this to be unfounded, though it noted ID is required to purchase some items such as alcohol, cigarettes or specific medicines.
