AAP confirms the appointment of Jonty Low as Executive Chair

August 20, 2025

Sydney, Australia - Wednesday, 20 August 2025 - Australian Associated Press confirms the appointment of Jonty Low as Executive Chair of the AAP Board. Ms Low replaces Gail Hambly who recently stepped down from the Board.

Ms Low was part of a consortium that came together to save Australiaʼs national independent newswire from closure in 2020. She returned to the Board in 2024 and was appointed Deputy Chair in May 2025.

The members and directors of AAP wish to acknowledge Ms Hamblyʼs extensive service to the Board, both as a director and Chair. She guided the organisation through a period of great upheaval
and helped secure the announcement of $33 million of federal government funding.

“The media industry continues to face unprecedented challenges,ˮ Ms Low said.

“AAP has served the news-media industry and Australian readers with content from all the major national and global events of our generation. Importantly, we also deliver the smaller stories, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“AAP is celebrating its 90th birthday in 2025 and is a key part of Australiaʼs democratic architecture. I look forward to building on Gailʼs foundation and to securing AAPʼs future for decades to comeˮ.
